City considers giving $3M to zoo for new gate

Winnipeg will consider giving a $3.1 million grant to help the Assiniboine Park Conservancy replace the zoo's main gate on Roblin Boulevard.

According to a city report released this afternoon, a new main gate is deemed critical to the success of the Journey to Churchill opening in 2014.

Assiniboine Park Conservancy has added the zoo gate replacement to its refurbishment plan, and the report said the organization has requested a $3.1 million grant advanced ahead of schedule.

The funds requested have already been included in the city's 2014 capital budget forecast. The report said capital grants for the Conservancy in 2014, 2015 and 2016 will be reduced accordingly.

Council's executive policy committee will consider the request at a meeting on Wednesday.
