City council’s property and development committee voted this morning to allow the city to seize possession of a home at 736 Magnus Ave. before it comes up with a redevelopment plan for the derelict property.

The City of Winnipeg hopes to cut down the time it takes to seize a derelict building by about one year by changing the order of legal hoops it has to jump through.

City council’s property and development committee voted this morning to allow the city to seize possession of a home at 736 Magnus Ave. before it comes up with a redevelopment plan for the derelict property.

Normally, the city would issue a call for redevelopment plans first. But that has allowed some owners to step forward at the last minute and claim to be interested in fixing up derelict properties. The change could cut down the time it takes to seize a derelict property from about three years to about two years, said property committee chairman Gord Steeves (St. Vital).

The change should also make more prospective developers interested in the property, as the question of transferring title is more certain, Steeves said.

The seizure of the the Magnus Avenue home still faces council approval.

The city has approximarely 600 vacant buildings, of which at least 200 could be considered derelict.
