City likely to post $5.4-M surplus: CFO

The City of Winnipeg is on course to post a modest budget surplus at the end of 2012, according to the latest financial status report from the chief financial officer.

According to figures from the end of August, the city is on track to post a $5.4-million surplus on its $900-million operating budget for 2012. End-of-August figures usually point to a modest deficit that is later erased.

This year’s surplus forecast comes on top of a pair of significant transfers the city already intends to make: $4.7 million to the snow-clearing reserve and $2.4 million to an insect-control reserve.

The city wound up with unspent snow-clearing funds this year because last winter was mild. Similarly, there was no need to spray for adult mosquitoes this summer.
