City man admits to fleeing scene of deadly hit-and-run

A Winnipeg man has admitted to fleeing the scene of a deadly hit-and-run that happened on Christmas Eve in 2010.
Christopher Ronald Peebles, 46, was set to stand trial Monday, but opted to change his plea to guilty at the last moment. He will be sentenced early in the new year following completion of a court-ordered report.
Peebles was originally charged with criminal negligence causing death and failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. However, the criminal negligence charge was dismissed by a judge at a preliminary hearing last year on the grounds there was insufficient evidence to prove his actions were reckless.
Reginald Blackbird, 66, was killed while on foot just metres from his daughter's Fife Street home. Police said at the time he was run down by an erratic driver.
After the car struck Blackbird, Peebles reversed his vehicle, drove around the critically injured man and fled the scene. Witnesses said a man chased the vehicle as it peeled away from the accident, jotting down a licence-plate number as the car travelled south on Fife.
Police arrested Peebles on Christmas Day near Manor House Court and Maberley Road.
Blackbird was bringing groceries to his daughter's home in preparation for dinner that night when he was struck and killed. His children and grandchildren were inside the home at the time and rushed outside to see the aftermath.
Blackbird was originally from Keeseekoowenin First Nation, north of Brandon.
