City seeking outside input on police efficiency
The City of Winnipeg is looking for outside help to scrutinize the Winnipeg Police Service's operations, with an eye to making the department more efficient.
The city announced today it will issue a request for proposals to conduct an operational review of the police service, which will spend $220 million on policing and public safety this year.
The purpose of the review is to find ways for the police to deliver better value for the money it spends, although the service is well-managed as it is, Winnipeg chief financial officer Mike Ruta said in a prepared statement.
"The review is intended to examine existing operations, organizational structure, systems, technology, administration and staffing," Ruta said in the statement.
The review is not intended to be a prelude to contracting out city services, he added.
The city has also launched a separate effort to review the public works department.
