City spending $300K on 2014 budget consulations with residents

Winnipeg will spend $300,000 this year for public consultations on the 2014 budget.

This morning, Coun. Paula Havixbeck urged council's finance committee to explore ways Winnipeg could reform its budget process. Havixbeck said Calgary engages 24,000 residents on budget consultations, and budget meetings in other cities are open to the public.

Havixbeck recently criticized the city's 2013 budget process, saying said non-EPC councillors had a limited opportunity to participate in the budget process.

Coun. Grant Nordman (St. Charles) said Winnipeg plans to spend $300,000 this year to consult with residents to hear what they would like to see in the city's budget. He said next year's budget will be difficult as there is a projected $70-million shortfall.

Nordman said city administration will report back on how public consultations will work at a meeting next month.

"We want them to know there is transparency and openness at city hall," Nordman said.
