City to hike water, sewer rates

City council has approved a rate hike to water and sewer services.

This morning, council approved a rate increase which means the average bill for a family of four will increase by six per cent this year. That works out to $51 a year, $1 per week, or 14 cents per day.

City council also voted in favour of:

  • A plan to buy 20 used articulated buses from New Flyer. The buses were part of Ottawa's old fleet to help reduce overcrowding on city buses.
  • A new process called "managed competition" that will measure whether Winnipeg delivers a service in the most cost-effective way. The city will work with its unions to see if they can provide services for less money than cost estimates submitted by the private sector. Couns. Ross Eadie (Mynarski), Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge), John Orlikow (River Heights) and Brian Mayes (St. Vital) voted against the process over concerns it means city employees will have to bid on their own jobs.
