Classic Hollywood films set for Silver City screen

Classic films are ready for their close-up this fall.

Cineplex announced its annual series of Hollywood greats to screen in Winnipeg at the Silver City Polo Park cinemas from September to December.

On the roster:

Sunset Boulevard (Sunday at 12:45 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.)

Director Billy Wilder’s perverse, darkly comic and infinitely quotable melodrama from 1950 puts a desperate screenwriter (William Holden) in the clutches of a faded silent movie star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) seeking a comeback, or as she prefers to describe it: "a return to the millions of people who have never forgiven me for deserting the screen."

Dracula/Frankenstein Double Feature (Oct. 21 at 12:45 p.m., Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 31, 2012 at 7 p.m.

The 1931 chiller Frankenstein starred Boris Karloff as the creature made — oops — with a "criminal brain." Following is Bela Lugosi as Dracula, also made in 1931. Preceding this double feature is a presentation by Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne interviewing Karloff’s daughter Sara, Bela Lugosi Jr., and Academy Award winning makeup artist Rick Baker discussing the early days of the genre and its icons.

Lawrence of Arabia (Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. and Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m.)

Director David Lean’s revered, Oscar-winning biopic from 1962 starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness and Anthony Quinn.

Miracle on 34th Street (Dec. 9, at 12:45 p.m. and Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.)

The perennial Christmas favourite from 1947 stars Edmund Gwenn as an old man who claims to be Santa Claus, and is willing to take his case to the courtroom. Watch for a young Natalie Wood as the little girl who believes him.

Tickets for each screening are $6 and can be purchased at the door or at www.cineplex.com/events.
