Winnipeg’s extended stretch of cold weather hasn’t made the city’s rivers any safer, the Winnipeg Police Service says.
The WPS river patrol unit sent out its annual reminder Sunday encouraging the public to avoid any open water and for parents and teachers to remind children of the dangers of thin ice.
"Despite the fact that recent weather has left little to be desired, certainly when it comes to the river and retention ponds, we don't think there is a Winnipegger who doesn’t realize and understand the dangers of the river at this time of year," Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
Police are asking people to avoid the city’s rivers as banks can be slippery, ice thickness unpredictable, and currents swift and freezing cold.
