A 43-year-old male passenger is dead after a Duffy's cab crashed into a tree near Portage Avenue and Beverley Street early this morning.
The driver of the Toyota Prius cab, a 31-year-old male, is in critical condition, a Winnipeg police release said.
Duffy’s general manager Gurdip Singh said the driver was in surgery late this morning.
Singh said he doesn’t know what happened and is waiting for police to review surveillance video from the cab’s camera.
The crash took place at about 3:50 a.m. today, police said. The driver and passenger were rushed to hospital in critical condition, but the passenger died later in the morning.
WPS spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said police are trying to confirm witness accounts that some sort of altercation was taking place between the driver and the passenger just before the crash.
Michalyshen said the passenger, who was sitting in the front seat, is originally from a community north of Winnipeg, adding the individual is also known to police.
Michalyshen said police have not been able to question the driver.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 204-986-6271.
A Duffy’s spokesman said the company is still trying to determine what led to the crash. Footage from the taxi's surveillance camera will be viewed, police said.
Westbound Portage Avenue, between Broadway and Simcoe Street, was closed for most of this morning while police investigated the scene of the crash. It was reopened about 10:15 a.m.
