Committee approves water-rate hike

WINNIPEG — City council's public works committee has approved a plan to increase Winnipeg's water-and-sewer rates next year.

The average Winnipeg household will pay $816.60 for water and sewer services in 2010, an increase of $21.22 over 2009, as the water and waste department raises more funds to pay for the city's ongoing $1.8 billion waste-water upgrade.

Couns. Bill Clement (Charleswood), Harry Lazarenko (Mynarski), and Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge) voted to approve the rate increases, which still face approval from executive policy committee and council as a whole. Coun. Dan Vandal (St. Boniface) voted in opposition because he opposes the use of water-and-sewer revenues to cover the cost of land drainage.

Clement and Lazarenko expressed concern the city has yet to receive $206 million in provincial upgrade money promised during the 2007 throne speech.

"Hopefully the provincial government will get off their toots and give us our fair share," Lazarenko said.
