Committee meeting next week to consider leasing out city golf courses

A city committee will consider plans to lease four city-run golf courses and contract out Winnipeg's custodial services in a bid to save money.

Next week, council's alternate services delivery committee will consider a plan to lease four city-run golf courses which are losing $850,000 a year, including Crescent Drive, Harbour View, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park. A city statement said leasing out the courses is expected to increase income and investment through rent and property taxes by about $7.1 million on a 10-year lease.

Another report recommends Winnipeg issue a competitive bid for the city's custodial services, expected to save $1 million a year.

In both cases, city officials say existing employees would be reassigned if the measures are approved.

The committee will review the proposals at a meeting on Feb 25.
