Conference Board expects Manitoba to be cushioned from economic woes

Manitoba is going to be one of the few bright spots in the Canadian economy in 2009 according to the Conference Board of Canada.

In its latest outlook report released this morning, it is looking for one per cent growth in Manitoba in 2009. It said the domestic economy in Manitoba and Saskatchewan will shield the Prairies provinces from a negative decline this year.

The report is calling for a significant bounce-back across the country in 2010 including a 3.1 per cent growth rate in Manitoba.

The Conference Board is forecasting a 0.5 per cent decline in the Canadian economy for 2009. But it expects the economy to start to recover by the second half of 2009 with gross domestic product growth in Canada in 2010 to spike up to 3.6 per cent.

In Manitoba the Conference Board sees the public sector construction projects, a strong agricultural sector and resilient manufacturing as being enough to cushion the province into the recovery period late this year and into next year.
