Manitoba's northern chiefs' organization is now officially involved in developing the potential for airships. Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) will co-host an international conference in October called "Remote No More" in Winnipeg.
MKO Grand Chief David Harper said there are many economic and environmental advantages that airships have over the transportation options that northern First Nations currently have to work with.
Harper said the technology is available and with the right kinds of partnerships - including government support - airships could be transporting goods up north in as little as three-to-five years.
