Construction will begin next year on a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Sage Creek, provincial officials said today.
The southeast Winnipeg school is expected to be as large as 68,000 square feet and sit on 6.44 acres of land at the corner of Sage Creek Boulevard and Edward Turner Drive. A cost estimate was not immediately available.
Approval had been given some time ago for a new school in this rapidly growing area in Louis Riel School Division. The Selinger government promised in last fall’s throne speech to announce the location for this school as well as one slated for Waverley West so that construction could proceed. The Waverley West location is still to be announced.
The Sage Creek school will accommodate between 450 and 600 students. Students from the community are now being bused to various city schools.
As with all new elementary schools constructed these days, this one will include an early-learning and child-care centre. The Sage Creek day care will accommodate up to 114 kids.
At an announcement at the construction site this morning, Premier Greg Selinger touted the new school as part of the province’s Manitoba Building and Renewal Plan to meet Manitoba’s critical infrastructure needs.
