Critics want more information on proposed sewage plant contract

WINNIPEG--A proposal to award a 30-year contract to one of the world’s largest environmental firms to build and help manage a $660-million sewage treatment plant continued to draw fire from critics at city hall on Wednesday.

Mayor Sam Katz and his executive policy committee endorsed an administration report this morning to award the controversial contract to Veolia Canada. But critics said too many key details of the contract are being kept from the public.

Mayor Katz and the administration refuse to disclose how much Veolia is being paid and how much it will earn in bonuses for any savings it produces over the 30-year term of the contract.

Katz said that all important details will be released once the deal has been approved by council, which will vote on it next week.

But critics, including Coun. Jenny Gerbasi and Mike Davidson, president of CUPE Local 500, said that kind of information needs to be released before council votes on the deal.
