WINNIPEG - Police are looking for a 54-year-old man who escaped from Rockwood Institution on Thursday.

The Correctional Service of Canada say Stephen Saunders escaped from the minimum security facility at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Saunders is serving a two-year, six month sentence for possessing stolen goods, driving while disqualified, possessing a weapon, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He began serving his sentence in March 2010.

Saunders is 5’6", weighs 166 pounds, has grey hair, a grey beard and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Saunders’ whereabouts, is asked to contact their local police department.

Federal correction officials say they will review how Saunders was able to escape and address any safety and security issues stemming from the incident.

Rockwood Institution is a minimum-security prison located 11 kilometres north of Winnipeg and adjacent to Stony Mountain Institution.
