Convicted rapist gets nine years

  • Print

A convicted rapist received a nine-year prison sentence today in a Winnipeg courtroom.

Norman Cook , 40, convicted in February of the brutal kidnapping and rape of a 43-year-old woman in August 2011, was sentenced this morning by Justice Christopher Martin.

The judge said Cook’s crime was a "vile, sordid assault" and a "spontaneous crime of opportunity fuelled by alcohol."

Court previously heard the victim was hobbling along Main Street in the North End just after 2 a.m., using crutches and her arm in a cast, when Cook jumped her, dragged her off the street and into his nearby apartment on Austin Street. Once inside, Cook blocked his door with his fridge, repeatedly beat her and forced her to engage in various sexual acts.

During a sentencing hearing April 10, Crown prosecutor Mitchell Lavitt recommended Cook serve a 10-year sentence, while defence counsel Theodore Mariash proposed a five-year sentence.
