Trans-Canada crash kills woman

RCMP confirmed a 48-year-old Winnipeg woman died following a rear-end collision east of Portage la Prairie Friday evening,.

The collision happened at about 5:30 p.m. when a 2005 Toyota Matrix was struck from behind by a 1999 Ford Ranger. Both vehicles were travelling in a westbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The woman riding in the backseat of the rear-ended Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP confirmed the woman was from Winnipeg. Her name will not be released.

The two other people in the car, a man and a women who were in the front seats, were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The female youth, from the RM of Portage la Prairie, who was driving the other vehicle, a Ford Ranger, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene, RCMP said.

RCMP closed the Trans-Canada Highway to westbound traffic and diverted traffic onto a nearby service road as they investigated, RCMP spokesman Miles Hiebert said. The highway reopened by 11 p.m.
