PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE--Two major curling bonspiels opened this morning in Manitoba with the men's 2012 Canad Inns Prairie Classic at the Portage Curling Club at Portage la Prairie and the women's 2012 Manitoba Lotteries Curling Classic at Winnipeg's Fort Rouge Curling Club.
Winning men's teams in the morning draw at the Canad Inns Prairie Classic included Daley Peters, Brad Gushue, Glenn Howard, Deijia Zou, Niklas Edin, William Lyburn, Dennis Bohn and Heath McCormick.
At the women's Manitoba Lotteries Curling Classic, the winning teams in the morning draw included Jennifer Jones, Amber Holland, Cheryl Bernard, Chelsea Carey, Sherry Middaugh and Shannon Kleibrink.
"We're very happy with the field we got this year. This is the best we've had in 10 years," said Trevor Found, the president of the Portage Curling Club. "There's a $58,000 purse with $18,000 for first place so it's one of the top events."
Found said Portage ice technician Garnet Cairns is being assisted by Greg Ewasko, who is the ice technician for the provincial championships, a combination that is certain to create a world-class surface for the competitors.
There are men's draws today at 1:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Women's draws today are at noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
