Hearing date set for inquest into death of Gods Lake Narrows baby

  • Print

A hearing date has been set to determine who can participate at the upcoming inquest into the death of Drianna Ross of Gods Lake Narrows.

Drianna, just two months old, was taken to a northern nursing station with a fever on Nov. 22. 2011. Her parents were sent home with Tylenol for her. Over the next few days her condition worsened.

Drianna's parents contacted the nursing station a number of times between Nov. 22 and 25, 2011, with concerns that her condition was worsening. On Nov. 25, 2011, she was brought to the nursing station three times for assessment and arrangements were made to have her transferred by air ambulance to Thompson General Hospital where she was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Despite treatment, Drianna's condition did not improve and she died at 12:38 p.m. on Nov. 26, 2011.

An autopsy confirmed Drianna's death was the result of respiratory failure due to a severe necrotizing lower-respiratory tract infection due to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis. The manner of death was natural.

Gods Lake Narrows is located about 225 kilometres by air southeast of Thompson.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest may be called to explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths to determine what, if anything, could be done to help prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

Before the inquest can begin, the judge will decide who can question and call witnesses by having standing at the inquest. People who want to have standing should contact the Crown and attend the hearing set for:

10 a.m., Dec. 14, Courtroom 402, Law Courts complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.

The inquest dates will be set following the hearing. Those interested in applying for standing should contact Sharyl Thomas, Crown attorney, 204-945-285
