Dauphin Kings coach under review for behaviour at hockey game

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has yet to make a disciplinary ruling on Dauphin Kings head coach and general manager Marlin Murray following an incident behind the bench Thursday night.

With time winding down in a 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Saints in Game 4 of the Sher-Wood Division semifinal, Murray unleashed an animated tirade against the officials working the game, throwing sticks, water bottles and various other projectiles at referees Brett Montsion and Ryan Galley.

It’s not clear why Murray went off like he did, but one can surmise the Saints' 16 power plays (which led to four power goals) had something to do with the frustration. Dauphin had eight power plays in the contest.

Murray declined to comment on the matter this morning.

The Kings, who finished 13 points ahead of the Saints in the regular season standings, trail the best-of-seven series 3-1. Game 5 of the series is Saturday night in Dauphin.

MJHL commissioner Kim Davis, who was at the St. James Civic Centre Thursday night, said the league is currently working through its review process and expects to make a decision on disciplinary action — fines and/or suspension — before Saturday’s game.

"I’m still waiting on the official’s report and those types of things, so I can’t really comment on much right now," he said. "We will have a decision either later (Friday) or Saturday. It will come before Game 5, though, that’s for sure."

Kings president Darren Russell said this morning he is reviewing the situation and is still collecting information on the events of the game. The Kings board of directors will discuss the incident in the coming days, but no decision has been made on the coach’s employment status.

Rumours suggested Murray was let go after the game, but those whispers are false, Russell said.

"No, not true," Russell offered. "We’re aware of the situation and we’re looking into it. We have made no decisions as of yet. We’re still in the midst of a playoff series and that’s our focus.

"Obviously, we aren’t pleased with this incident. That’s not how we want the Dauphin Kings to be represented. We’re aware of what happened and we’ll talk about it."
