Decade of strong sales for wheat board

WINNIPEG — The Canadian Wheat Board exported a decade-high 18.8 million tonnes of wheat, durum and barley in the crop year that ends Saturday.

CWB president and CEO Ian White told a Winnipeg news conference today that wheat exports for the 2009-10 crop year also reached their highest level in a decade, at 13.6 million tonnes.

Durum exports hit their highest level in three years, at 3.8 million tonnes.

White said the return to Western Canadian farmers from the year’s grain sales was $4.8 billion. Although that was the third highest return in the past decade, it was well off the record of $7.2 billion set in the 2007-08 crop year, and the near-record return of $7.1 billion in the 2008-09 crop year.

Because of record rains this past spring, which left 10.5 million acres of farmland unseeded, White said the board is forecasting wheat production in the new crop year will drop to 15.6 million tonnes from 18.8 million tonnes in the year just ending.

Durum wheat production is expected to fall to 2.9 million tonnes from 5.5 million, while barley production is expected to decline by 1.5 million tonnes to 7.4 million.
