Goldeyes hold on to edge RailCats
The Winnipeg Goldeyes allowed three runs in the top of the ninth inning but held on for a 6-5 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (7-9) on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park before a crowd of 6,149.
Winnipeg infielder Yurendell de Caster hit a fifth-inning grand slam while starting pitcher Ace Walker (2-0) got the win and struck out three batters to tie the team's all-time record for career strikeouts at 313, a record previously held by Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. Gary relief pitcher Nolan Nicholson (1-1) took the loss.
The Goldeyes (11-4) now head out on the road for a four-game set Monday-Thursday in Lincoln, Neb., against the Saltdogs before stopping in Fargo for three games against the RedHawks.
Lefty Chris Salamida (0-0, 3.21) is expected to start for the Goldeyes on Monday.
De Caster's grand slam, his team-leading third dinger of the season, put the Goldeyes on the board and up 4-1.
The RailCats put up a second run in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by first baseman Mike Rohde.
Winnipeg took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the eight on consecutive RBI doubles by Josh Mazzola and Ridge Carpenter.
Closer Nick Carr got into some trouble in the ninth inning, walking two batters as the RailCats scored three runs, including one on the Goldeyes' fourth error of the game, before Carr struck out the last batter with the bases loaded to end the game.
