Destiny Watt joins mayor's staff as policy analyst

Mayor Sam Katz’s office is about to get more help on the policy side.

Destiny Watt, who has spent the past six years as St. James-Brooklands Coun. Scott Fielding’s executive assistant, will move into the mayor’s office next month, working as a policy analyst and researcher, according to an announcement by Bonnie Staples-Lyon, Katz’s chief of staff.

Watt will work alongside policy director Brad Salyn and will also be responsible for the mayor’s environmental and seniors’ advisory committees, Staples-Lyon said.

The City of Winnipeg has been without a policy office since the city dissolved Executive Policy Committee Secretariat in 2009 and assigned the department’s staff to other areas. At the time, Katz said he did not need policy advisors.

Since then, however, the mayor’s office reversed course by creating a policy director position, which has also been held by Krista Boryskavich, who now works as a city lawyer, and Derek Rolstone, who’s no longer with the city.
