Details unveiled for zoo makeover

WINNIPEG — A new Arctic exhibit, primate enclosure and horse barn will join a new polar bear enclosure as part of the redevelopment of Assiniboine Park Zoo.
The Assiniboine Park Conservancy announced a long-term zoo revitalization plan that will include new exhibits and enclosures as well as a new main entrance along Corydon Avenue.
The centrepiece of the new zoo will be the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, which will encompass both an exhibit and and environmental education centre.
The centre plans to coordinate a rescue program for orphaned bears, which may include temporary placement in Winnipeg.
Right now, Assiniboine Park Zoo can not house polar bears because its existing enclosure does not meet Manitoba Conservation standards.
The Assiniboine Park Conservancy is an arm's-length non-profit agency in the process of taking over the management of the city's largest park.
It's planning to launch a $180 million capital campaign to redevelop the zoo, build a new conservatory, expand the duck pond, replace the playground, build a new water-play area, create a new family centre, improve bike and footpaths and create a people mover that will transport visitors through the park.
The 10-year project will require funds from all three levels of government as well as private and corporate donors.
