WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg doctor who had his medical license revoked in the U.S. spent time in provincial jail this year after he was convicted on two counts of assault.

Dr. George Korol spent 42 days in custody before he was sentenced to an additional three months in provincial jail on June 26. He was convicted on two counts of assault, possession of a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply in connection with a Dec. 22 assault in his St. Andrews home.

Korol is currently on three years supervised probation.

Earlier this week, the College of Physicians and Surgeons confirmed Korol was suspended in February, but would not specify what trigged the governing body to temporarily pull his license.

It’s the second time Korol has been suspended from practising medicine in Manitoba after he was deported and had his license revoked in the U.S. in 1998.

Medical Board of California documents reveal Korol was arrested in his Orange County office on July 4, 1995 and charged with attempted murder, arson and uttering terrorist threats.

A day earlier, an explosive had been tossed into his mother-in-law’s house, where his wife was staying on the heels of their divorce proceedings. Neighbours put out the fire.

Public record documents show Korol was convicted of arson in the firebombing and also uttered repeated threats to harm his wife and her family — including to chop off her head and cut out her father’s tongue as he slept. He was sentenced in 1996 to five years in state prison and served more than three years behind bars.

He was forced to pay $1,850 and $150 in restitution.
