The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has scored a diplomatic coup prior to next May’s performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Gary Doer, Canada’s ambassador to the United States and the former premier of Manitoba, has agreed to serve as honorary chair of the WSO’s Carnegie Hall campaign committee, the orchestra said in a press release Thursday.
"I am extremely proud to be part of the amazing accomplishment by the WSO and look forward to being ‘Live in New York’ for this historic, once-in-a-lifetime performance," Doer said in the release.
The WSO was selected to perform in the final year of the New York Spring for Music Festival in a competition with 33 other North American orchestras.
On Thursday, May 8, 2014, the WSO’s Carnegie Hall performance will include The Shaman Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, by WSO’s composer-in-residence Vincent Ho, featuring percussionist Evelyn Glennie, Derek Charke’s Thirteen Inuit Thorat Song Games, with throat singer Tanya Tagaq, and R. Murray Shafer’s Symphony No. 1.
