WINNIPEG -- Dozens of dogs are receiving medical care at the Winnipeg Humane Society after being removed from a building in the RM of St. Andrews on Tuesday night.

Bill McDonald, chief executive officer of the Winnipeg shelter, confirmed this morning that 79 dogs were removed from a "substandard breeding facility" after an order came from the provincial veterinarian's office.

He called the effort "the biggest recovery that we've undertaken since we moved into our new building" in 2007.

McDonald said the dogs -- a mix of bulldogs, spaniels, Wheaten terriers and Lhasa Apsos -- arrived at the shelter thin, thirsty and covered in feces. Some also had gum disease and other teeth problems.

But none was euthanized, McDonald said.

The dogs ranged in age from four weeks to 12 years old.

The animals had been house in cages, as many as three to a cage, in a 40-foot by 70-foot shed near a residence in St. Andrews, north of the airport, McDonald said.

The humane society had four veterinarians and many staff members and volunteers working through the night to care for the dogs.
