Downtown BIZ outreach program transferred to police cadets

Starting today, blue shirts will replace the red shirts patrolling Winnipeg’s downtown.
The Downtown BIZ outreach program officially passes the torch to the Winnipeg Police Service cadets at a ceremony today.
The BIZ outreach patrol program started in 2006 with red-shirted patrollers taking to the streets downtown to deal with intoxicated and indigent people.
The patrol workers helped people access social services and made the streets safer downtown, the BIZ said in a news release.
Now the police cadets will take over, it said.
The BIZ's Downtown Watch Ambassadors, who provide guest relations for visitors, will continue their red-shirted presence in downtown Winnipeg, a BIZ spokesman said.
