WINNIPEG — A suspect was in hospital Tuesday in critical condition after being Tasered by Winnipeg police Monday night during an altercation with officers behind the Kirkby Terrace apartments in the 300 block of Kennedy Street.
Police spokeseman Const. Jason Michalyshen said officers came upon the man while searching for a couple involved in an unrelated domestic dispute nearby.
Michalyshen could not confirm what led police to become involved with the man, saying details would come out after a thorough investigation by the Major Crimes Unit. He said he is unaware of a weapon being seen during the altercation.
"Whenever we have officers involved in these types of incidents, we have to gather all of the facts and gather all of the information so I’m very reluctant to say for sure," Michalyshen said. "That’s something the officers themselves will have to put into their reports. We’re still gathering that information."
Michalyshen said they are still attempting to identify the suspect, so police cannot comment on whether he was known to police before the incident.
"Based on information that these officers may have had, this individual may have been thought of as being involved in this domestic-related incident. They may have simply been interviewing this individual, and things escalated and they were forced to deploy their electronic control device," Michalyshen said.
Witnesses said there were several police cruiser cars in the area at the time of the incident.
Approximately six hours later, police attended to the same address after reports of a man being assaulted. They found an injured 18-year-old man at the front entrance of the apartment building suffering from injuries to his upper body. He was transported to hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded to stable condition later Tuesday.
Michalyshen said two suspects, aged 17 and 19, fled the area, but were located in the area of McDermot Avenue and Isabel Street and were taken into custody.
The investigation continues.
