Downtown biz group celebrates 2012 achievements

The new rapid bus transitway, a restored theatre and plans for new downtown housing are among the biggest achievements in 2012 touted by Winnipeg’s downtown business advocacy group.

"We have all of the right tools, and our downtown can become as vibrant as we hope it to be," said a statement from Downtown Winnipeg BIZ today.

Along with 1,700 new housing units planned or under construction, the group also cited the expansion plans for the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the redevelopment of the Avenue Building on Portage and the newly-restored Metropolitan Theatre as signs of fresh optimism and economic benefits for Winnipeg’s core.

Festivals like ManyFest, Nuit Blanche, Pride Festival and the Santa Claus Parade brought thousands of people downtown this year, the statement said, and the installation of 49 new bike racks on downtown sidewalks and at the Millennium Library helped provide new transportation options.

With Phase One of the bus rapid transit project open this year, "now more than ever do we require demonstrated leadership in implementing our vision for transportation – a critical piece in bringing people downtown," the group said.
