Downtown sees more robberies and thefts in first quarter of 2012

Winnipeg's downtown has seen a slight increase in the number of commercial break and enters, robberies and thefts.

The number of crimes reported in the city's downtown increased 28 per cent between January and March 2012, compared to the same time period the previous year, according to statistics compiled by the Downtown Security Network.

The Downtown Security Network is a Downtown BIZ safety initiative which used Winnipeg Police CrimeStat data to compile the statistics between January and March 2012.

Data posted online show there were 16 commercial break and enters, 47 non-commercial robberies and 16 vehicle thefts in the downtown between January and March 2012, compared with five commercial break-and-enters, 29 non-commercial robberies and 11 vehicle thefts during the same time period in 2011.

At the same time, the number of homicides decreased from three in 2011 to one in 2012, residential break and enters dropped from eight in 2011 to zero in 2012, sexual assaults dropped from six to three, and the number of commercial robberies decreased from four to three.
