Former city councillor and environmental scientist Terry Duguid made it official today.

He is seeking the Liberal nomination to run in Winnipeg South in the next election. He is hoping to defeat Conservative Rod Bruinooge, who has been the MP for Winnipeg South since 2006.

Bruinooge defeated longtime Manitoba Liberal MP and senior cabinet minister Reg Alcock in an unexpected victory in 2006.

Duguid left his job as president of the Winnipeg-based International Centre for Infectious Diseases to devote himself to the campaign which most expect will occur this fall.

If he wins - there are no other candidates at the moment - it will be Duguid’s third run for Parliament in five years. He ran in Kildonan-St. Paul in both 2004 and 2006 but lost to Conservative Joy Smith both times. He did not run in 2008.

Duguid said he hopes to get action finally on three things that have languished in Manitoba - cleaning up Lake Winnipeg, developing Winnipeg’s cluster of biotech companies and long-term funding for municipal infrastructure.

The nomination meeting is expected to occur in September.
