E-waste roundup now year round

Manitobans can now recycle their e-waste for free year round at 10 depots in the province, and until the end of October at 20 other locations, the province announced today.

The provincial e-waste round-up launched this morning at the Computers for Schools office on Wyatt Road in the Inkster Industrial Park, one of 10 locations that will take old computers, VCRs, stereos and other unwanted electronics for free recycling year-round, starting tomorrow.

"More partners are expected to come on board, as happened last year," said science and technology minister Jim Rondeau at the announcement.

Other new year-round depots include Miller Environmental on Hekla Avenue, which also takes household hazardous waste for safe disposal, and Syrotech Industries, which previously recycled e-waste year-round but had to charge a handling fee.

E-waste round-ups collected more than one-million kilograms of electronic waste in Manitoba over the last two years. All e-waste collected is sent to Ontario for recycling and none goes to landfills, said Rondeau.

"We actually monitor to make sure that it's disposed of appropriately," he said.
