Early-morning blaze investigated as arson

A blaze which destroyed two buildings on Notre Dame Avenue and caused about $1 million in damages early today is being investigated as an arson.

District fire chief Paul Robinson said today the blaze started in a garbage bin behind Miranda Foods, at 530 Notre Dame Ave., and spread to the building at about 2:40 a.m.

"It was well-involved when we arrived," Robinson said while firefighters poured water into the building.

Two occupants inside the building — the business’ owners — were able to get out safely.

Robinson said a firefighter burned his hand while battling the fire.

Robinson said the buildings are a total loss and damage is estimated to be $450,000. Winnipeg police have since estimated the damages to be $1 million.

Notre Dame west of Isabel Street to Langside Street was closed for several hours today but has since been reopened.

Winnipeg police say anyone with any information on the blaze is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6813 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
