Earthen dike being built at Morris

In Morris this afternoon, bulldozer operators are constructing an earthen dike on the south side of the bridge, just outside of town, in anticipation of flood waters.
 

Reeve Herm Martens said it’s the sixth time in his 13 years in office that dikes have had to be built to keep water out of the southern Manitoba community.

He and others believe there is a better solution – building a bypass to the west of Morris and raising the lowest points of Highway 75 to above-1997 flood levels.
 

"I really don’t care how (provincial officials) do it, as long as (a permanent solution) gets done," Martens said.
 

At the lowest point of Highway 75, near St. Jean Baptiste, spillover from the Red River is already licking the northbound lane of the highway.
