Eastern Canada ice storm causes delays at Winnipeg airport
Expect flight delays heading east out of Winnipeg today.
Thanks to the severe ice storm that hit Eastern Canada Saturday, flights heading into and coming from markets such as Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal are experiencing delays.
Officials confirm the storm is causing a slight headache and inconvenience for travellers trying to get home for the holidays, so patience and planning is advised.
"What we would advise for people travelling today is to check our website (waa.ca) before you head out," said Felica Wiltshire, spokeswoman at the Richardson International Airport.
"Check the arrivals and departures. If you’re planning to pick up family at the airport, just double-check to make sure their flight isn’t delayed."
Some flights out of Eastern Canada have been cancelled, while others are seeing delays in the one- to three-hour range.
Most carriers are handling the situation quite well, Wiltshire added.
"We’re noticing that (the ice storm) is affecting flights across the board," she said. "But it’s not too bad. Sometimes, when a major hub like Toronto is experiencing issues, it has a trickle-down effect across the country.
"Our advice is just check our site or the specific airline before you come down. That information is being updated all the time."
