Eastman region records most collisions with deer at 1,800 a year
Most deer collisions are in eastern part of province.
Communities in eastern Manitoba record more collisions with deer than anywhere else in the province, new data shows.
Manitoba Public Insurance released data this morning which shows the Eastman Region, which includes Lac du Bonnet, St. Malo, Pine Falls, Birds Hill Park area and Steinbach, recorded about 1,800 vehicle-deer collisions a year between 2007 and 2011. Another 1,500 vehicle-deer crashes are recorded in the Brandon/Westman area, 1,000 in the Interlake, 600 in the Pembina Valley, and another 500 in the Central Plains and Parkland area.
MPI said there is an average of 6,800 vehicle-deer crashes every year in Manitoba, and showing the high-risk areas will help educate motorists.
Last year, more than 300 people suffered injuries from wildlife-related collisions. In the last 10 years, three Manitobans have been killed in crashes caused by an animal on the road.
