Elderly man attacked at Polo Park Shopping Centre

A 73-year-old man was taken to hospital Tuesday after a random attack at Polo Park Shopping Centre, police said.

The senior was walking in the mall at about 12:20 p.m. when a man came up from behind and assaulted him "in a completely unprovoked attack," police said Wednesday.

Moments later, police said, the man again assaulted the elderly man, who, according to media reports, was taken to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

Mall security were able to hold a suspect until officers arrived on the scene.

Matthew Dean Ottertail, 24, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and has been detained.

The shopping mall has been the scene of other violent incidents in recent months.

On Boxing Day, several shoppers had to be taken to hospital after pepper spray was released in the mall. In January, a 28-year-old man was arrested after someone threw cleaning solution at a security guard.
