It was a grind, but the Elmwood Giants survived a tight battle against the West Kildonan Wolverines on Thursday night, winning 14-7 to claim the title of Winnipeg High School Football League Andy Currie division champions.
The teams entered the second half tied 7-7, on the back of a first-quarter touchdown pass for the Wolverines and a plunge into the end zone by Giants quarterback Braydin Chicoine on the other side. But the stalemate wouldn’t last; with just over seven minutes left in the third and the Giants lined up on their opponents’ three-yard line, Elmwood tailback Shaun Neil clutched in a short toss from Chicoine. He broke the plane before he was brought down to pull his team ahead 14-7.
The next quarter-and-a-half were tense, as the teams battled up and down the field but held each other scoreless. The Wolverines did get one last chance to tie the game: Late in the fourth, Giants punter Alexander Squires couldn’t corral a high snap, allowing the West Kildonan team to take over on downs deep in Elmwood territory.
But a penalty pushed them back, and Giants defender Elvis Mingano stuffed West Kildonan running back Tyler Byron. Quarterback Kelson Borisenko’s long-bomb attempt to save his team’s game fell incomplete with just 46 seconds left to play.
