Enstrom headed for MRI after injury

The Winnipeg Jets will be without one of their top guns for awhile.

Defenceman Toby Enstrom, the team’s leading scorer, will have an MRI on his shoulder today after being injured in the first few minutes of Friday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The extent of the damage – and how long he might need to recover – likely won’t be made official until Sunday or Monday.

"It will put him out for a little while… we don’t know exactly how long," said head coach Claude Noel after the team’s practice Saturday at MTS Iceplex. "We’re facing some adversity, we have been for some time. So this is just another adverse moment for us. The thing we’re going to find out about ourselves is we have to stay together and we have to support the way that we play and continue to play hard."

Enstrom has two goals and 11 assists for the Jets this season and has been averaging just under 24 minutes of ice time per game. His injury, coming in Zach Bogosian’s 2013 debut, meant that the Jets enjoyed having their full crew of defencemen together for the first time this season for only a few minutes.

"It’s a big loss for us," said Dustin Byfuglien. "He’s a key guy on our team. He’s a great partner to have out there. That’s the way it goes sometimes. It’s hard to keep the same lineup, but it gives opportunities for other guys to step up and show what they’ve got. They’ve got some shoes to fill, but we’ll be all right."

The Jets did get some encouraging news from sick bay on Saturday as winger Antti Miettinen was back practising with the team for the first time since injuring himself during training camp. Miettinen said his injury was accidental, after he tripped on some sticks and crashed into the boards.

He’ll accompany the Jets on their upcoming road trip that begins on Tuesday in Buffalo.

The Jets round out their three-game homestand Sunday afternoon against the Boston Bruins (5 p.m.; TSNJets/TSN1290.
