Ex-correctional officer arrested in alleged assault

A former correctional officer is facing a charge of assault following an incident at the downtown Provincial Remand Centre.

Winnipeg police said the 30-year-old woman was arrested following a complaint from her former employer, Manitoba Corrections, about an alleged attack on an inmate Aug. 30.

The woman was one of three correctional officers who were fired as a result of the beating.

A fourth correctional officer was suspended.

Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said the woman’s identity has not been released because she has not yet been formally charged.

Michalyshen said the woman turned herself into police Friday. She was released on a promise to appear.

Michalyshen said the victim was a 40-year-old man. The extent of his injuries are not known.

The Aug. 30 beating prompted Manitoba Corrections to conduct its own review of the Remand Centre. The province has also asked Correctional Services of Canada to review the Remand Centre operations.

Michalyshen said the investigation is completed and no other individuals are being considered as suspects.

A Manitoba Justice spokesman confirmed that disciplinary measures against some of the correctional officers included dismissal, but the department would not comment on the police charge.

The spokesman said the internal review by the department is complete, adding that Correctional Services Canada has begun its review.
