Existing home sales dip in city

WINNIPEG — Sales of existing homes dipped for the second straight month in July, according to new data released today.

Winnipeg Realtors said 1,225 properties sold last month through the local Multiple Listing Service (MLS). That was two-per-cent shy of July 2011’s total of 1,246.

June’s MLS sales were also were down by the same amount from a year earlier.

But despite 21 fewer properties being sold, the dollar volume of sales last month was still two per cent higher than the previous July, at $294.4 million versus $288.1 million.

And year-to-date unit sales and dollar volumes were still running ahead of last year’s pace after the first seven months. Unit sales were tracking three per cent ahead, at 8,146 versus 7,906, and dollar volumes were up by three per cent — $2.0 billion versus $1.84 billion.

WR president Shirley Przybyl described July’s numbers as "another solid performance" by the local market.

"We are still moving on a sales pace so far this year that is only slightly behind the fastest one set in 2007," she said.

"Even if we do fall short in the end, 2012 is shaping up to be worthy of a Clara Hughes smile," she said of the local Olympic cyclist and speed skater.
