Family fears for safety of missing woman

She’s a missing mother of five grown children whose family fears for her safety.

Now, police say they’re looking to speak to Mildred Flett’s longtime boyfriend for possible leads to her whereabouts.

"The situation is very strange," said Angeline Nelson, Flett’s daughter, who lives in Letellier.

"I could understand if she wanted to go somewhere for a couple weeks and didn’t tell anybody. But it’s just been so long she hasn’t had contact with anybody."

Nelson said her 51-year-old mother was last seen in early June, although a neighbour says she saw the woman in early July.
Her family said they filed a missing persons report with police on June 24 after they tried unsuccessfully to contact her.

Flett, who also goes by the surname Nelson, has five children aged 17, 23, 25, 30 and 33 who live outside the city.

"It’s not like her to just disappear," Nelson said of her mother.
Flett, who did not have a phone at her downtown apartment, has not responded to repeated Facebook messages from her children since June. As well, posters they put up advertising her disappearance have come up empty.

Police put out a missing person alert Monday, saying Flett’s disappearance was "out of character" since she had gone so long without contacting friends or family.

However, police said Tuesday they do not suspect foul play.
Police have not called the Flett’s boyfriend a suspect in her disappearance, but said they want to speak to him. Angeline Nelson said her mother dated the man for about seven years. Flett filed a protection order against him in February. The order prevented the man from communicating with Flett for three years or coming within 200 metres of her Smith Street apartment.
Residents there said they haven’t seen Flett lately but heard rumours she was missing.

A neighbour of the woman said she saw her on July 2, and the woman told her she was heading to The Forks. The two were friendly because she said she’d helped Flett before.

People with information about Flett’s whereabouts are asked to call the Winnipeg Police Service’s missing persons unit at 986-6250.

Flett is an aboriginal woman who’s about 5’10. She weighs about 140 pounds, and has wavy dark hair. She has brown eyes and tattoos on both her forearms.
