Half of CMHR's staff leave over last 2 years

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has lost more than half its staff over the past two years, a heavy turnover administrators blame on financial uncertainty.

Since 2011, at least 38 employees have left Winnipeg's first national museum, including 20 people in permanent positions.

The museum currently has 68 positions and expects to have 93 filled by the end of March 2013.

CMHR president and CEO Stuart Murray said Thursday he attributed some of the departures to financial uncertainties during the period before Ottawa confirmed the museum would receive $22 million worth of annual operating funding.

Some of the positions only needed to be filled for short terms, he added, noting the programming requirements for 47,000 square feet of new museum space.

Former museum staff, however, complain of interference in the museum's direction from its board of directors.
