Fire at tax centre forces 85 to evacuate building

No one was injured but 85 federal income tax workers were evacuated when a fire broke out at the Winnipeg Taxation Centre this morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic platoon chief Albert Sigfusson said the blaze started at the front entrance of 66 Stapon Road where construction crews are doing renovation work.

"The fire is not large but the smoke is extreme," he said.

Sigfusson said the smoke is being ventilated -- to protect tax records and computers -- but they are still battling the fire.

"We are going to pour foam into a space," he said.

The 85 workers were safely evacuated to the nearby Kildonan Place mall.

None of the tax workers would comment.
