Fire causes $1-million damage to barn
A fire at Staib Farms, in the R.M. of Hanover Friday night caused an estimated $1-million damage to a former dairy barn that was being used as a machine storage and repair building.
"It was the largest fire I’ve seen in my 20 years with the department," said New Bothwell fire Chief Ken Hiebert.
Although the fire is still under investigation Hiebert said it appears to have been accidental. There were no injuries and no livestock was being housed in the barn.
Staib Farms, a long-time dairy operation, now farms grain.
Assistance from both the Kleefeld and Grunthal fire halls, and equipment from all the fire stations, was required to control the blaze.
"Thankfully the wind was on our side or a newer barn and houses on the property could have also been lost," added Hiebert.
Subscribers to NoLimits, a local high speed internet provider, were also affected by the fire as the company's antennae, located on the top of a silo on the farm, was scorched by the fire.
