Six people escaped safely from a fire that destroyed a home in the 600 block of Alexander Avenue and knocked out power in the area on Tuesday at around 9:30 p.m.
Bystanders reported flames shooting out windows during the blaze, which Winnipeg fire crews got under control in less than an hour.
"The six people who self-evacuated told us the fire started in the basement of the house. They were not in the basement at the time so they don't know what started it," said platoon Chief Albert Sigfusson.
He said the fire came into contact with power lines, so Manitoba Hydro came to the scene and cut power in the area while crews worked on the fire.
There was no damage estimate available on the two-storey home.
