Fire sweeps through two North End homes

WINNIPEG -- One person is in unstable condition with burns and a firefighter is listed in stable condition in hospital following a fire overnight in the North End that involved two homes, Winnipeg police reported Monday morning.

The firefighter suffered minor burn injuries when crews responded to the scene just after 1:20 a.m.  Monday.

Flames tore through a home in the 700 block of Aberdeen Ave., gutting the house. Then the fire spread. A larger home next door was extensively damaged before crews could get the flames under control.

The occupant who suffered burns was living in the first house. No one was injured in the house where the fire spread, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reported Monday.

Damage to the first house where the fire started was estimated at $80,000. Damage to the house next door was $250,000.

At this point, it appears careless cooking was the cause of the blaze, police said.
